May - Costa Rica

In May, John and I went to Costa Rica. After getting freaked out from reading all the online blogs, we arrived, rented a car and drove to the less visited Caribbean coast. We stayed in a great hotel, right on the beach. The highlight of the trip was going on a turtle egg laying tour. We drove on an old bus and arrived. No lights allowed. We walked the beach, saw the hatchery and then sat on the beach to wait. The guides located two huge mamma turtles who came to the beach that night to lay their eggs. The group took turns watching. It was awesome. If the eggs are layed too close to shore, they are moved to the hatchery. Later, they let some of the baby turtles go back to the sea. We formed two lines so the babies would stay on course. Only a very few survive.
Later we headed up to the Arenal volcano and spent time at the hot springs. We had our own little cottage. It was really nice. While there, we walked on a kind of catwalk through a rain forest. We also visited a coffee processing place.
It was nice to go, but nice to come home too.
